Rather than typing DIRECTORY to find out what files you have in your Unix account, you'll instead want to type ls, as shown: 
$ ls -l
total 8
-rw-------   1 taylor      1689  Feb 11 09:51 that
-rw-------   1 taylor         0  Feb 11 09:51 the-other
-rw-------   1 taylor       563  Feb 11 09:51 this
